SANDERSON LAUNCHES AMARI PRINTS & WALLPAPERS BY
MAGGIE LEVIEN / JANUARY 2008

March 2008 sees the launch of ‘Amari’, the second collection of prints and wallpapers from Sanderson by designer, Maggie Levien. Following on from 2007’s highly successful ‘Pompom’ collection, this new selection continues to explore Levien’s enduring passion for Eastern imagery, arts and textiles and further extends Sanderson’s portfolio of smart, contemporary designs.

The Amari collection has been imbued with an ethereal quality, with many of the designs taking their names from Greek nymphs or goddesses. Motifs are taken from a host of eclectic sources, from an antique Indian pashmina carpet to a Japanese textile, and are reworked in Levien’s distinctive handwriting; stylized florals, boldly depicted yet with lightness and femininity in the design and colouring.

“I love exploring contrast and the element of surprise when designing, whether this is in the juxtaposition of different wallpaper printing techniques or the muted shades of Ancient Chinese silks injected with a shot of contemporary colour”

Maggie Levien, Guest Designer, Sanderson

A strong colour story runs through the collection; lime greens, burnt orange and vibrant pink act as striking accents on backdrops of classic duck egg and linen. Sophisticated neutrals including deep, inky aubergine and muted taupe add a touch of mystery while pale linden green continues the ethereal feel and provides a delicate tonal effect. Pure black and faded charcoal lend a touch of drama for the more adventurous scheme.

The collection, comprising five print designs and six companion and complementary wallpapers, is ideal for drapes and upholstery.

With very best wishes,

The team at Victoria Murray PR

Amari Prints

Elegantly balanced and ranging from lively to serene, the Amari prints feature an abundance of stylized florals, leaf motifs and trails.

Aptly named ‘Aerial’ depicts a pair of leaf motifs in repeat as if floating across the width of the fabric. Inspired by a naïve, early 19th century block print this stunning design is treated in contemporary ground colours enlivened with a shot of bold colour from zesty lime to vibrant pink.

‘Callisto’, a vivacious, eclectic design takes its name from the beautiful Greek nymph. Inspired by an archive document of French surface printed wallpaper and using a vibrant mix of colours, the stylized, trailing flower heads have been revitalised to create a design perfect for contemporary interiors.

A calm yet impressive design, ‘Leora’ places delicately drawn peony heads against a ‘shadow’ background of interwoven leaves. The subtle tones of the flower petals creates an unusual, three dimensional quality to the design.

Taking its name from the goddess of the harvest, ‘Ceres’ sees tonally coloured roundels dancing across the width of the fabric amongst a trail of subtly textured leaves. Inspired by a 19th century Indian pashmina carpet, the design has a beautiful worn quality, capturing the character of the original textile.

Finally, ‘Sarasa’ completes the collection with an elegant curving design inspired by an antique Japanese textile. Understated neutrals, fresh lime and soft aqua colourings help to make this perfect for upholstery.

Amari Wallpapers

Of the six designs in the Amari wallpapers collection, four are companions to the prints, namely Aerial, Ceres, Leora and Callisto. Although not always directly colour-coordinating, they retain a similar character and theme.

A natural evolvement from the print design, ‘Aerial’ has the addition of a stylized trail of leaves and makes a fabulous companion wallpaper. Soft glamour has been added in some colourways with the use of a pearlescent base colour.

‘Ceres’ is a classic ‘all over’ paper. Restrained glamour is provided with the contrast of metallic roundel heads on chalky grounds with a background of leaves.

Bold in layout but delicate in detail, ‘Leora’ depicts pearlescent flower heads with fine metallic outlines which shimmer against a soft matt ground. A stunning black and white colourway sits alongside subtler palettes of classic taupe and duck egg.

With its colourfully eclectic flower heads and bold layout, ‘Callisto’ sits happily on its own or as a direct companion to the print. Clever use of texture gives the impression of an old surface printed wallpaper with a contemporary feel provided by the playful use of colour.

In addition, ‘Cybele’, an all over floral silhouette with a beautiful tone on tone effect has been created by printing pigments and metallics with a soft sheen onto a chalky matt ground. A versatile design with subtle soft ivory and sand colourways offered alongside dramatic black on black.

With colourways ranging from masculine, platinum metallics to the soft sheen of duck egg and cream, ‘Selene’ is an elegant, wide strié stripe, perfect for a variety of interiors. The wonderful strié textured effect is achieved by printing coloured metallics and pearlescents onto carefully selected tonal grounds.  Available in six colourways.
