Zoffany launches Strie Damask Papers, March 2008
This classic wallpaper collection of grand damasks, stripes and plains uses the technique of dragging a wide badger hair brush over padded colour to create natural strie textures. This method of production provides the quality of a traditional 19th century dragged paper with a completely random effect, making each paper entirely unique.
The stries have been over-printed by screen with seven beautiful designs with a mixture of opaque, transparent, pearlised and metallic inks to create a rich and decorative range.
There are eight designs in total including a plain strie in 24 colours.
Romany Damask is in the Italian/Venetian style and the original pattern probably dates back to the late 1700’s. Motifs of sunflowers are surrounded by scrolling leaves in a graceful symmetrical pattern. The eight colourways range from subtle neutral stries overprinted with opaque white to rich metallic stries overprinted with transparent inks.
Potpourri damask is an elegant interpretation of a design taken from a French silk garment dating from the Louis XVI period. Garlands of leaves and small flowers surround motifs of peonies tied with bows. The six colourways are printed on subtle ombre grounds and range from delicate pastel shades to moody tones of grape.
Eugenie is a formal, medium scale damask with a simple symmetrical motif placed to create a trellis/ grid pattern. There are six colourways including delicate blues, neutrals and bolder graphic combinations.
Malmaison, a grand baronial damask design, dates from the early 1800’s with typical motifs of stylised fruit and scrolling leaves, highlighted by a delicate line detail. The eight colourways were based on silk documents in our archive and range from soft classic hues to rich reds and black.
Opaline Damask has been adapted from an imbeline damask woven in silk and linen and dating to the Louis XIV period. It has been printed using pearlised and metallic inks on an ombre striped ground in a selection of seven contemporary colours ranging from soft grape to elegant duck-egg blue.
Opaline Stripe takes the soft ombre background of the above damask as a semi-plain coordinate in the same seven colours
Wide Stripe is a blocked two-over stripe printed with transparent ink over a strie ground.
It comes in six subtle colours.
Strie Plain has been designed to match or coordinate with the entire collection with most colours taken from the grounds of the damasks to facilitate decoration in rooms where designers wish to keep some walls plain. It therefore has been produced in a very comprehensive selection of 24 beautiful colours from the palest ivory to rich metallic charcoals.
